August LoveWay Horse of the Month: Whitey

by Caitlyn Andrews August 08, 2016

August 2016 Equine Therapy Featured Horse

LoveWay featured horse of the month for August is a special paint gelding named Whitey. Whitey is pretty new to the therapy program but has done similar work with children in the past. He's enjoying his new job working with disabled children, even though he has a disability himself.

A New Therapy Horse at LoveWay

Whitey just recently joined the LoveWay team on a lease from his owner. In fact, of all the therapy horses at LoveWay, Whitey has been in the program for the shortest amount of time. He arrived in May this year and was accepted on staff in July. Whitey was previously used for a horse camp in Michigan so it wasn't surprising that he fit in so easily to life as a therapy horse. In the short time that he has been at LoveWay, it's easy to tell that Whitey has had a good amount of training in the past and he knows his stuff.

All About APHA Therapy Horse: Whitey

Whitey is a registered paint. His American Paint Horse Association (APHA) registered name is Mighty Whitey Fella. It's a fitting name. 13-year-old Whitey is so light skinned in some areas, particularly his face, that he has to stay in the barn during the day to avoid sunburn. Between 15.2 and 15.3 hands high (abbreviated HH- there are 4 inches in a hand), Whitey is a mighty sized horse.

For as big as he is, Whitey is referred to as a 'pocket pony'. He loves attention! He always wants to be close to people and loves treats. He has even taken on the role as a greeter in the barn. LoveWay is currently in between semesters, which means lots of new people have been coming in the barn for tours and volunteer training. Whitey greets them all from his stall with a friendly nicker. When he first arrived the LoveWay staff got to see him show off his personality right away. He was turned out into the arena and it was discovered that he likes looking at himself in the arena mirror. He blows on the mirror and is very interested in his own reflection. He's a sweet boy with a big personality.

Overcoming His Own Disability

As the LoveWay staff get ready for the fall semester they know that Whitey will be able to bring something to the students beyond just his fun personality. Recently, this past December, Whitey had surgery on his right eye to remove cancer. Whitey is adjusting to life without the vision in his right eye and has been doing great. The good thing about Whitey being blind in one eye is that it will give students something to relate to. Students are taught to talk to Whitey while on his blind side, helping them connect to him and see him as an individual.

Whitey's Future at LoveWay

Whitey is quickly becoming an instructor favorite. His past training is making him the perfect practice horse for one of the new instructors that is preparing for her PATH exam in September. The LoveWay staff is also looking forward to having students meet Whitey in the fall when the new semester starts.
