December 2015 LoveWay Horse of the Month: Copper

by Caitlyn Andrews December 01, 2015

LoveWay Horse of the Month Copper

With so many great therapy horses at LoveWay Inc, a non-profit in Middlebury, IN, it can be hard to choose just one horse to feature each month. It's easy to pick one of the long time favorites, but the new horses are just as special! This month, we'll introduce you to one of LoveWay's newer additions: Copper.

LoveWay's New Addition

Copper is a 17-year-old Paint/Quarter Horse gelding. He lived a life as a 4-H horse before his therapy career. Copper was donated to LoveWay in March of 2015. It took him a little extra time to get adjusted to his new life as a therapy horse, but the extra time was worth it.

When Copper first arrived at LoveWay he was very attached to his buddy from his old home, Merryweather, a mini donkey. (Stay tuned! We'll be featuring Merryweather in the future) Even though she's too small to be ridden, Merryweather is also used in the therapy program. Copper can get buddy sour, meaning he gets anxious when separated from his friends. He didn't like being separated from Merryweather. This is the reason he now shares a pasture with Babe. Babe is the only horse that Copper can be friends with, but doesn't get upset when they are separated.

Babe was the November Horse of the Month and is retiring this month. Read her story here.

It didn't take long for the LoveWay staff to get to learn Copper's personality. The staff affectionately refers to him as a "dork" and a bit clumsy, like an awkward teenager. He can be a slow learner, but he always loves to please. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body. He loves investigating the toys used in classes. He enjoys riding out on the trails. Copper rarely spooks and doesn't even shy at the lifts used to get the students on the horses' backs. He's a good boy that always tries his best. Even though it took him longer than some to learn the ropes, Copper is a great fit for LoveWay. Copper seems to really enjoy his life as a therapy horse.

Not many horses have the honor of having a custom horse model made in their likeness. One thing that sets Copper apart from the other therapy horses is that his old owner had a custom Stone Horse model made of him. The Peter Stone Company of Shipshewana, IN, makes beautiful, handcrafted Stone Horse Models, like the one pictured above of Copper. The model now resides in the LoveWay staff's office.

Do you like helping people and being around horses? LoveWay could always use more volunteers. Contact the staff at LoveWay to get started. If you have a child who could benefit as a student at LoveWay then be sure to check into the rider scholarship programs that LoveWay offers. Maybe your child will even get to ride Copper.

How to Treat Rain Rot in Horses

by Caitlyn Andrews April 17, 2019

It's spring and that means April showers are here. It's warming up outside and the horses are out enjoying the break from the long winter.

It might feel nice out, but spring weather is ideal for a pesky skin condition called rain rot. Standing out in the rain is one of the most common ways for a horse to get rain rot, but it's not the only way.

At VPSI, we're proud to be able to sponsor the LoveWay horses. LoveWay is a non-profit organization that offers equine-assisted therapy in Middlebury, IN.

Horses that fit perfectly into the program are a rare find. Even great therapy horses take some time to adjust to their new life as a LoveWay horse.

That's why Miracle is so special. He's one of the few horses that entered the program and was ready to go from day one.
